Immune Boosting Herbs

As the weather changes and winter draws near, you may be concerned about wearing extra clothing to keep warm and avoid becoming ill. Or perhaps, you are trying to avoid your colleague, friend, or loved one who always has the sniffles this time of year. Whatever your case may be, there are plenty of immune boosting herbs that can help you maintain good health.

Cats claw, well known for its sharp curved thorns, is an excellent immune booster. Cats claw strengthens the immune system against pathogens ( bacteria, virus, etc.) naturally found in the air, environment, and even water. Its bark and root contain alkaloids and oxindole, which is where the immune boosting qualities are found. When used as a natural means to boost the immune system, cats claw is proven to have powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

Echinacea, a herbaceous flowering plant in the daisy family, is also known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. This wonderful herb has been shown to increase the number of white blood cells, which helps to fight infections. Also, If you are an individual who gets achy during the cold season, you will love echinacea as it has the ability to promote circulation to the joints and ease pain throughout the body.

Another powerful immune boosting herb is Elderberry. Research has shown that the complex sugars in elderberry is what gives it its ability to support the immune system in fighting and preventing colds and the flu. Elderberry contains almost 90 percent of the daily value in vitamin C, which is vital when trying to recover from or prevent colds and other immune suppressing illnesses.

Finally, licorice root. Licorice is the root of a Glycyrrhiza glabra, when extracted, a sweet flavor is brought from it. As an herbal medicine, licorice root is very beneficial when trying to boost the immune system. Known for its potent antioxidant, licorice root has been used for decades in treating anything from the common cold, to auto-immune disorders. Licorice root naturally boosts the immune system by increasing levels of interferon, which is an immune system chemical that helps to fight off infections.

Please remember that when taking any herb, it is vital that these herbs are not used more than 6 to 8 weeks. This is because the body will become adjusted to the daily use of these herbs, making the herbs ineffective.
